Family Health
• Children are more vulnerable to the effects of pesticides and herbicides due to their physiological development and daily activities.
• Of the 26 most widely used pesticides in the U.S., the EPA classifies 12 as carcinogens.
• Many are linked to problems with birth defects, reproductive dysfunction, neurotoxicity, and liver/kidney damage.
• A recent University of Washington (2001) study found that 109 out of 110 urban and suburban children had pesticides in their urine samples.
The Environment
•
Pesticides enter storm water, and find their way into nearby creeks, rivers and lakes.• More than half of the most commonly used pesticides are toxic to birds, fish and aquatic organisms.
• 11 out of 30 commonly used pesticides are endocrine disruptors.
A Beautiful Healthy Lawn That Requires Less Work!
On a lighter note… organic lawn practices really work. By focusing on having living soil, you don’t have to sacrifice a beautiful lawn in order to forgo chemical fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
The Slippery Slope
In reality, heavy use or misuse of chemicals leads to more lawn problems. Chemicals kill beneficial bugs and microorganisms that naturally fight disease and insects.
Eventually you wind up with dirt and lawn that is vulnerable to problems. Once people have problems they treat their lawns with more chemicals.

Although Green Conscience is primarily a service business, we do not want to exclude the homeowners who prefer to do the work themselves.
Green Conscience has 2 options:

Organic Fertilizer
•
Slow-release organic fertilizers provide vital nutrients to grasses without risk of burning or harming the grass. They help support the health and vitality of the soil, lengthening and strengthening grass roots, and increase resistance to pests and disease. Spring, fall and winterizer applications available.Weed Control
•
Corn gluten pre-emergent weed control applied spring and/or fall.Top Dressing with Organic Compost
•
Excellent energizer for tired lawns. Improves water retention, adds beneficial microorganisms. Applied 1/4”-1/2” in spring or fall.Aeration
•
Aeration, which removes plugs of dirt, helps increase water retention and supports air circulation to grass roots. Annual aeration in the spring, very early summer or fall is sufficient. A pesticide-free lawn will encourage earthworms, nature's aerators.Over seeding
•
All lawns can benefit from occasionally over seeding to develop a thick stand of grass. This will fill in bare spots and help choke out weeds.
Soil Analysis and Amendments
•
Soil pH may be contributing to weed problems or poor grass health. By creating the proper balance of pH, nutrients, and trace elements, your lawn will thrive.Composting
•
Have an attractive compost bin installed on your property.• Worm bins- While it may sound unappealing, having a worm bin is an easy way to compost most kitchen scraps. They have no odor and are very low maintenance. You wind up with super charged castings that are great to add to gardens, potting soil, or to make “tea” to water your houseplants.
